Do you NEED a painting handle? Grimm Gripp Review
I've spent years holding my minis by the base without knowing any better. After trying some painting handles, finally one really clicked - the Grimm Gripp! Thanks to Sarah at DarkArtsMinis and the folks at Grimm Gripp for supplying me one to review. I labeled the video as "includes paid promotion" since the handle was free, but this opinion is my own (I wasn't paid to say it's great!). This is a wonderful video. Thank you for the courage to film and post it. I've noticed a similar undercurrent of people in this hobby who use it to help settle their minds and improve their mental health. I even teach a course at conventions called "The Mental Game of Painting" where many of the issues you discussed come up regularly. We need to talk more about mental health in this hobby, and I truly appreciate you and this contribution to the discussion.

It's amazing how many miniature painters release videos similar to yours. I definitely find peace when I'm painting minis. So thank you for sharing. I've been through some terrible stuff in the past three years and this hobby helps me reach a peaceful place. It's not automatic, however, for me. I begin to reach that peaceful place when I lower the magnifier and accept the challenge.

Haven't tried the Vallejo primer yet but I've seen a lot of reviews really bashing it? I really like the Stynylrez but It seems to be a real bitch to clean out of my airbrush. I ended up using lacquer thinner but it's still a chore.

I use both primers myself and love them both. I have been using the Badger Stynlrez for much longer then the Vallejo. I have a few bottles that have never frozen of the Stynlrez and they are nearing six or seven years old and still shoot just fine. Good video and thanks for the info.

I'm new to certain aspects of this hobby but not entirely. My recent trip over the internet while doing some research tells me that Vallejo products seem to need a little extra shakig and mixing. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a lot of user error here. As I'm replacing my old Apple barrel paints with better things, I invested $5 in some glass beads to use as agitators. I expect that will help me get ahead of some of these reddit complaints. An upside of getting into this now is that Vallejo is refreshed much of their hobby product line -- whether that is some of the formulas or simply the labeling -- it's easy for me to be sure that I'm getting product that has not been sitting in a sun-bleached paint rack for 8 years at a game shop.

I used Vallejo primer for 2 years and had some issues, always using a bit of thinner and still clogging up, then I accidentally used "to much" thinner and it works like a charm. I do not know the other, but if you use more thinnner on the Vallejo primer, it is just working beautifully. Only rubbing off when a thin coat, I am always doing 2 coats, which I think you always should, as to much handling with your oily fingers will rub off everything, especially if you hold the mini at the same part over and over

Most people just want to hear themselves talk and/or sound authoritative. They are a joke. I have never had a problem with Vallejo and it is a fine primer. It produces a fine finish that is a great base for paint. As you said, I don’t know what people are doing to it. Great review.

The problem with this style is that people who are not very experienced with the hobby confuse STYLE and METHOD. To me, style is all about color palette, overall feel and certain staples, for example it can be more or less realistic, use more or less texture on flat details and so on. And method is basically what techniques you use to achieve the result. And you can be as complex with your methods while aiming for basically any style. You could aim for grimdark style with both noob friendly and golden daemon tier techniques. But there is an ongoing misconception that grimdark us about, basically, aiming low and overusing drybrush and washes, heavy use of wash-based rust effects and complete lack of highlights aside from very basic. Thus most of the time miniatures look bleak and dark not because of actually good combination of colors and purposeful use of techniques, but because they are, quite frankly, look like undercooked crap with now readable contrast, a way to avoid actual learning how to paint, a way to cut corners. I'm not trying to gatekeep what's considered good or not, and I'd rather have everyone around play quick and dirty "grimdank" style instead of grey plastic, but this idea of confusing style and method needs to stop.

The problem with Valejo Primer is usually on larger kits. Even if you wash your kits and I do, Vallejo doesn't sand well. Also if you are working on a kit that you are going to mask over for paint Vallejo is bad about pulling off with the tape. I switched to Stynylrez problem solved.
